A private day in Islamic and Coptic Cairo

A private car takes you to nine stops, from the Hanging Church and Ben Ezra to the Citadel, Sultan Hassan and Khan el-Khalili, and you choose how much help to add. Pick it for flexibility: four options let you go from a bare car and driver all the way to guide, tickets and lunch.

Private Day in Islamic and Coptic Cairo

About this experience

Emo Tours runs this private day over the same nine stops as its full-day tour: Coptic Cairo with the Hanging Church, Abu Serga and Ben Ezra, the Mosque of Amr ibn al-As, Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifai, the Citadel and Khan el-Khalili. About six hours. What changes is the menu of options, which is longer here and lets you build the day around your budget.

Four options, from cheapest up. "Car with Driver + audio Guide" is the $15 one: transport and a recorded commentary, nothing else. "Private Car + Tour Guide" adds a live guide. "Car + Tour Guide + Entry Fees" adds tickets for the paid stops: the Citadel at EGP 550 and Sultan Hassan with Al-Rifai at EGP 220, EGP 770 a foreign adult. "Tour with lunch" adds a meal at a local restaurant; the listing doesn't say which extras come with it, so check the option text. Guests report anything from a three-course set lunch to a buffet.

Our pick is the guide option and your own tickets. One guest put it plainly: they paid their own admissions to two places, "which was cheaper than booking with the admissions included". Another, unhappy with the guide, said to stick with the driver only and quoted the tickets at EGP 770 per adult. Reviews sit at 4.6 from 263; the low ones are about guides, a missed pickup and a booking the operator couldn't find. The listing also advises against it for travellers with back problems or heart conditions and in pregnancy.

What guests say

★★★★★

Affordable private tour with guide and driver. Convenient pick-up and drop-off at the hotel. [...] We paid for our own admissions to 2 places (which was cheaper than booking with the admissions included). Ended up going 9am-4pm and felt it was totally worthwhile.

Having a skilled private driver (Mohamed) and knowledgeable guide (Wagih) made a huge difference in what we saw and learned. We covered the main churches, synagogue, citadels, and mosques plus other sites.

Amr, our driver was also a great guide! Gave us the inside information and then pointed out the sequence in which to view the sights, making the trip very efficient!

Mahmoud tailored the activities to my interests and went the extra mile by pointing out the best vantage points for photos. He took photos for me with my phone. This was very helpful as I was solo.

Tips before you book

  • Buy your own tickets. Book the guide option and pay EGP 550 at the Citadel and EGP 220 at Sultan Hassan by card. A guest found that cheaper than the ticket option.
  • The audio guide is the base option. If the history is the point, book the live guide; most five-star reviews name one.
  • Tell the guide which half you care about. One guest had to insist on Coptic Cairo after a day weighted to the mosques.
  • Extra stops cost extra. A guest was asked for EGP 1,000 to add a site; agree any change and its price before you go.
  • Save the operator's WhatsApp number from your confirmation. A guest who waited two hours for a pickup couldn't reach anyone.

Frequently asked questions

Is the guide included on Emo Tours' private Islamic and Coptic Cairo day?

Not on the cheapest option, which gives you a car, a driver and an audio guide. The other three options include a live guide. Each option is priced per person by group size.

What do the entry fees cost if I pay them myself?

For a foreign adult in 2026: EGP 550 for the Citadel with the Muhammad Ali Mosque (card only) and EGP 220 for Sultan Hassan with Al-Rifai. EGP 770 in all, about $15. The churches, Ben Ezra, the Mosque of Amr ibn al-As and the bazaar are free. Our tour prices guide adds up the full day.

How is this different from the full-day tour by the same operator?

Same stops, same operator. This listing starts lower ($15 against $20 for the largest group) and has four options, including entry fees and lunch; the full-day tour has only audio guide or live guide.

Where does pickup happen?

At your hotel. The listing's pickup points cover downtown Cairo, Giza, 6th October and New Cairo; enter your hotel when you book to check it's served.
