Old Cairo Walk with Street Food

About this experience

OceanAir Travels Egypt starts this walk at Bab al-Futuh, the northern Fatimid gate, and works south down Al-Muizz Street. On the way: the Mosque of Al-Hakim, Bayt al-Suhaymi, the Ottoman merchant's house with its garden courtyard, the Madrasa of Sultan Barquq and the Qalawun complex, before Khan el-Khalili and the Al-Hussein Mosque. Three hours, all on foot.

It's the only tour on this site that includes the tickets for the Al-Muizz monuments. The unified ticket is EGP 220 per foreign adult and Bayt al-Suhaymi is a separate EGP 220, so the entrances alone come to EGP 440, about $8.50. Add the snacks (zalabya, the little fried dough balls, or halabessa) and a meal of koshary or Egyptian pie, and the $34 flat price looks fair. Two options: meet at the gate, or add hotel transfers from Cairo or Giza.

The catches are small. It's a shared tour, and the listing allows up to 50 travellers, though guests describe small groups. The meeting point is the gate itself, so if you skip the transfer option you get yourself there; Bab El Shaaria on Metro Line 3 is the nearest station, 10 to 15 minutes' walk, or take an Uber. Reviews are 4.8 from 65, and every recent Viator review gives five stars.

What guests say

★★★★★

Akram was a great guide - he was very knowledgable about the history of Islamic Cairo and showed us all the important monuments. He also offered to take pictures of me and my sister. The tour included entrance fees to mosques and other historical buildings and everything went very smoothly. We ended the tour with an excellent lunch of Egyptian pancakes!

Good activity for arriving at 6:30am after a 10 hr flight w/ little sleep. We saw the area that wasn't included in our main 12-day trip.

Tips before you book

  • Arrive early at Bab al-Futuh. The listing asks you to be on time, and the guide won't wait long for a shared group.
  • Cover shoulders, arms and knees, and bring a scarf for the mosques, as the listing asks.
  • Carry some cash for drinks and anything you buy in the bazaar.
  • Taking the metro? Get off at Bab El Shaaria (Line 3) and walk 10 to 15 minutes, or take an Uber straight to the gate.
  • Sites can close for prayers or restoration; the listing says the order may change.
